routing – Using two pi’s, can I spoof my location via VPN?

I wish to set up two raspberry pis. One at home in say CA, and another at my friend’s house in say NY.
I then wish to connect the two pis via a VPN through the internet.
Then, I wish to connect to my PI at home in CA via a wifi dongle, and have all my traffic routed through my PI here in CA through the VPN to the PI in NY and give any of the sites and services I use the impression I’m in NY using my friends ISP in NY. I have all the permission I need from my friend in NY to do this.
Is this possible and what sorts of software packages should I be looking at?
If someone has experience doing this and has been successful and can give me a rough checklist it would be enough to answer this question.
