Without a doubt, our biggest takeaway from attending Computex 2025 in Taipei, Taiwan, this year was our introduction to Risteárd McSweeney of 360Technology.io. We met Risteárd through his representation of KIOXIA at their exhibit and he has been able to accomplish something that we haven’t for several years, our review of the consumer side of KIOXIA products. In fact, our review of this KIOXIA Exceria Plus G4 Gen5 SSD in this report was completely the doing of that meeting, which is actually an excellent thing as we have been persuing the review of the consumer side of KIOXIA for some time.
There is a bit of a negative to this, of course, and that is the fact that KIOXIA consumer products are not ‘officially’ available in North America; they are available to Europe and the Asias only at this time. Checking Amazon USA, we can find KIOXIA consumer SSDs (and specifically the SSD we are reviewing today) for sale, however a word to the wise which is that warranty through this route may be somewhat questionable since it is not ‘an official ‘KIOXIA’ sale. A huge plus is that our links will automatically default to your local Amazon, whether they be North America, Europe or the Asias.
The KIOXIA Exceria Plus G4 is the first PCIe 5.0 release by KIOXIA and is a 4-lane SSD that is available in one and two terabyte capacities. This SSD is of a 2280 form factor (22mm wide x 80mm long), relies on the latest NVMe 2.0 SSD operating protocol and speaks to Gen 5 mid-range performance of 10GB/s read and 7.9GB/s write.
The KIOXIA Exceria Plus G4 is a single-sided SSD which contains the Phison PS5031-E31 Gen5 DRAMless 4-channel SSD controller along with two pieces of KIOXIA BiCS8 218-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory. Personally speaking, it’s great to see KIOXIA memory on a KIOXIA consumer product.
Although the fact that this is a single-sided DRAMless SSD alone would identify this SSD as a low-heat Gen5 SSD ideal for laptops, the fact that that E31 controller is only a 7mm TSMC footprint also contributes. We have reviewed two other products using the Phison E31T Gen5 controller, the Corsair MP700 Elite and the Crucial P510 most recently.
The KIOXIA Exceria Plus G4 Gen5 SSD comes with a 5-year warranty, has a 1200TBW rating for the 2TB version and can be found at Amazon for $239.99 at the time of this report.
Let’s check out some speeds…
