Lossless scaling took the gaming world by storm as it provided an opportunity for many gamers to play AAA titles on their aging hardware without having to spend a couple of hundred dollars on an upgrade. It has served as an alternative to features such as DLSS and FSR and comes in clutch for older GPUs that don’t support them.

We’ve seen some good updates to lossless scaling, and the fact that it works so well despite being developed by a single guy is simply incredible. However, the latest update takes things to the next level as there is a massive load reduction on the GPU.

Give your GPU a break with the latest lossless scaling update

In the LSFG 3.1 update, lossless scaling brings some architectural changes to the table that help improve the image quality and deliver better performance. First, there are some quality improvements, which we’ll go over.

The 3.1 update brings the following improvements:

  • Enhanced overall image quality within a specific timestamp range, with the most noticeable impact in Adaptive Mode and high-multiplier Fixed Mode
  • Improved quality at lower flow scales
  • Reduced ghosting of moving objects
  • Reduced object flickering
  • Improved border handling
  • Refined UI detection

So, you should experience much better image quality, and the reported issues have been ironed out. However, the most interesting element in this update was the load reduction on the GPU. This has been labeled ‘Performance Mode’.

The new mode provides up to 2× GPU load reduction, depending on hardware and settings, with a slight reduction in image quality. In some cases, this mode can improve image quality by allowing the game to achieve a higher base frame rate.

So, what this means is that depending on your setting, you can experience better output while taking some strain off of the GPU, which is great, as it should give you overhead for squeezing out more from your card. So, if you’ve got a graphics card that doesn’t support the latest upscaling technologies like FSR 4 or DLSS 4, lossless scaling is an excellent alternative.

Lastly, Finnish, Georgian, Greek, Norwegian, Slovak, and Toki Pona localizations have also been added for a better user experience.
